< b>“What’s a Cheesy Pick-up Line?”

CHEESY = (adj.) of poor quality. It’s said about things that are bad but not offensive. Cheesy can be sort of bad and funny at the same time. Think of Las Vegas.
PICK-UP = (verb/noun) to meet a stranger of the opposite sex, usually with romantic intentions.
LINE = a spoken phrase, often sounding off-hand but memorized.
So a pick-up line is the first thing a man says to a woman he’s just met and whom he’s interested in. (Of course women can use pick-up lines too)

Put students in groups and hand out these cheesy pick-up lines.
1. Are you hurt? Because it’s a long fall from heaven.
2. Do you have a map? Because I got lost in your eyes.
3. Hello. Are you taking any applications for a boyfriend/girlfriend?
4. Hello, I’m a thief, and I’m here to steal your heart.
5. I’m new in town. Can you give me directions to your apartment?
6. If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put U and I together.
7. What’s your mother’s phone number? I’d like to call her and thank her for creating you.
8. Wouldn’t we look cute together on a wedding cake ?
9. Excuse me, but I only have three months to live…
10. You’re like a dictionary. You add meaning to my life.
Questions for Groups
Which are the best pick-up lines?
Which are the cheesiest?
Would any of these impress a boy/girl?
Writing
Now give students 10 minutes or so to write their own pick-up lines. Remind them to have fun. These should be cheesy. Funny. Silly.
Compare and discuss.
