About “Fightin’ Words”

“Them are fightin’ words!”

It’s not good grammar, but that’s what a fellow from the backwoods might say if someone insulted him. Meaning, “What you say is insult enough to make me fight you.” Or, more simply, “You are asking for trouble.”

1. CAT FIGHT (noun) - a fight between women.

2. BRAWL (noun/verb) - a noisy quarrel, squabble, or fight, usually involving several people.

3. GO AT IT (verb) - fight or quarrel

4. OUCH! - an exclamation expressing sudden pain.

5. PUNCH, SOCK, SLUG (verbs and nouns)- to hit someone with your fist. Or a hit from the fist.

6. PUNCH-DRUNK, or PUNCHY (adj.) - showing slow movements or unclear thinking. Like someone who is dizzy from having been hit.

7. SLAP (verb and noun) - hit someone with your open hand.

8. GET KNOCKED OUT (verb) - to lose consciousness from a blow to the head.

Put the above words–in their correct forms– into the sentences below:

1. The girl ____________ Mr. Poosheesty when he tried to kiss her after their first date. Ouch! His cheek hurt.

2. The people in the next apartment were really ________________. We could hear them screaming at each other through the walls.

3. Some guys in the bar started yelling at each other. Then somebody punched somebody. And in a minute lots of guys were fighting. It was one big ________________.

4. Two girls didn’t like each other. The scratched and fought. It was the first ________________ Mr. Poosheesty had ever seen.

5. When I went to Tahiti, a coconut fell from a tree and landed on my head. Ouch. I was a little _______________ after that. I couldn’t walk straight or think clearly.

6. The coconut didn’t hurt as much as the time I dropped the bowling ball on my foot. __________! That hurt.

7. When I dropped the television on my head it didn’t hurt so much, because I ____________________. I woke up about 10 minutes later.

8. My friend Warren likes boxing. He thinks it’s entertaining to watch two grown men ________________ each other again and again.
